Access is critical to planning a trip to one of Ohio’s beautiful lakes or watersheds. Exploring a new area can require scouting trips, or time lost to wrong turns and unexpected conditions. There’s nothing worse than missing your pull-out because you don’t know what to look for on the river.
That’s why greenfloat is launching the Mapping Initiative. Using high quality drone and conventional photography, our goal is to create an interactive map that will save you time when you’re sitting down to plan a float. Pinpoint potential access points and map your route with measuring tools. Identify parking conditions, portages, and difficult approaches. Our goal is to take the guesswork out of planning your next float, and make it that much easier to sit back and enjoy the natural beauty of Ohio’s waterways.
There’s no better way to experience the serenity of nature than on small crafts like kayaks and canoes, but water and weather conditions can pose serious threats to your safety and enjoyment. Temperature, wind, precipitation, and flow rates can all drastically affect the dynamic when you’re on the water. Planning a fishing trip adds even more complexity to the equation where water clarity, moon cycles, and water temperature all play pivotal roles. Preparing yourself often means researching half a dozen sites or apps, and navigating clunky government websites to feel confident about your trip.
We feel your pain, and at greenfloat we’re working to simplify the process. The goal of our Consolidated Condition Resources initiative is to create a convenient, unified resource where you’ll be able to check all of these conditions at a glance. Spend less time with your screen, and more time on the water!
Greenfloat was started in 2023 with a focus on protection and access for Ohio’s watersheds.
Ohio boasts beautiful natural river systems that have supported Ohio’s economy, recreation, and industry throughout the last centuries. But those watersheds have always been under threats from development.
After the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire, Ohio has worked hard to renew the quality of their water resources, but there is still a long way to go. Even as recently as 2019, the crown jewel of Ohio’s natural scenic rivers, the Big Darby, was added to America’s Most Endangered River List
Greenfloat looks to change the way we interact with our watersheds by increasing awareness through education, exploration, and education. We urge everyone to get out and enjoy the rivers, and do what we can to protect them for generations to come.
